Reading and Maths

Lexia Reading Core5 (KEY STAGE 1) 

Reading Core5® (Lexia) is a computer-based integrated learning system that aims to improve reading skills. Lexia provides children with individualised reading instruction and practice in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural awareness, automaticity, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension. 
 
Pupils begin with an online independent diagnostic test and are automatically placed at an appropriate level: they then work independently on their school’s devices away from their classroom setting, with support and oversight from trained teachers, HLTAs or TAs. The online programme tracks pupils’ progress, providing extra practice and instruction on areas of difficulty. Trained teachers or HTLAs/ TAs are encouraged to monitor pupil progress on a weekly basis via online progress reports that are automatically generated by the Lexia software. 
 
Teachers, Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) or Teaching Assistants (TAs) are trained to deliver the programme and attend all training sessions. Pupils can use the system with minimal supervision, the programme also includes offline paper-based resources for school staff to offer additional support where needed. Pupils are expected to use the system at least four times each week, for 30 minutes per session. 

EEF Lexia Reading Core5® (2022/24 trial)

As part of the Department for Education’s Accelerator Fund, the EEF is supporting programmes that have positively impacted pupil outcomes in previous EEF trials to reach more pupils, by subsidising the cost of the programme for schools.  
 
Maths Champions 
The National Day Nurseries Association’s Maths Champions programme builds the knowledge of nursery practitioners to support children’s early mathematical development. It is an online, one-year programme delivered to both Private, Voluntary or Independent (PVI), maintained and school-based nursery settings. 
 
In each setting, a ‘Maths Champion’ is selected: a senior member of staff, who is supported to drive improvement in maths practice across the setting. This member of staff, with support of an allocated Deputy Maths Champion, is supported to audit current practice and create and implement an action plan for supporting colleagues to improve maths practice throughout the year. The support includes bespoke online training, including modules on early mathematical development and coaching, resources, and one-to-one support. 
 
All PVI, maintained and school-based nursery settings in England are eligible to participate in the programme. Settings will be onboarded from February 2024 to June 2024, with the programme being delivered over 12 months. Settings must nominate a Maths Champion and Deputy Maths Champion who are qualified at Level 3 or above. Settings with a minimum of six 3 & 4 year olds can register their interest to take part in this project below.
